Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brazil's capital, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President President Trump, leading him to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

He is being held in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that the former president be authorized to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The plot was prevented because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. Lula was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
